The Elder Project provides a variety of in-person and virtual classes, bringing writing and storytelling workshops to senior centers across San Francisco and Oakland.

San Francisco Village / IT Bookman Community Center

Mondays 10:30am - 12pm

Class is split between San Francisco Village (3220 Fulton St, San Francisco, CA) and the IT Bookman Community Center (446 Randolph St, San Francisco, CA).

Writing in Community: Skilled writing instructors guide you in telling the tales of your life. Capture the high points, the comic episodes, the struggles and triumphs. We’ll write together, or if you prefer, we’ll record and transcribe your words. Led by Melissa Cistaro, Tureeda Mikell & Denise Sullivan.

Writing for Remembering: We all have memorable stories to tell. Join in sharing the experiences of your life in a supportive, informal writing workshop. An instructor guides you in recalling memories and writing about them. Read your stories and listen as others read theirs. All writing levels welcome. Led by Mary Gayle (MG) Thomas.​

San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (residents only)

1st and 3rd Thursdays, 10:30am - 11:30am

Writing in Community: In this workshop, residents of San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) read and discuss short selections from exceptional authors. The instructor offers a writing prompt inspired by theme or craft, and everyone puts pen to paper. The group then shares the work aloud. Led by Melissa Cistaro and Tam Putnam

 

This workshop is made possible through a partnership with the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living.​

Downtown Oakland Senior Center

Tuesdays @ 12:30pm - 2:00pm PST

Creative Writing & Storytelling: We open the doors to creativity and community through writing. A discussion of readings by exceptional authors is followed by in-class writing connected to the reading’s themes or techniques. The work is then shared aloud. Everyone, whether experienced or new to the page, is welcome. Led by Michelle Kicherer and Denise Sullivan. Made possible by a partnership with the City of Oakland.

Community Living Campaign

Wednesdays, 6pm - 7:45pm PST

Writing in Community: A discussion of exceptional fiction, nonfiction, and poetry is followed by in-class writing time, with prompts inspired by the reading’s theme or technique. The writing is then shared aloud. Both experienced and emerging writers are welcome at this workshop led by published teaching artists Antony Fangary, Sabina Khan-Ibarra, Tureeda Mikell, Tam Putnam, and Denise Sullivan. This workshop is in partnership with the Community Living Campaign.
